On October 25, an extensive collection of Alexander Hamilton artifacts will be auctioned. Hamiltonians &#8211; whether or not they are interested in bidding &#8211; may want to review the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freemansauction.com\/auction\/1716-the-alexander-hamilton-collection-of-john-e-herzog\/?au=5574\">Alexander Hamilton Collection of John E. Herzog<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 44 items in the collection pictured below are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hamilton&#8217;s January 14, 1790 Report on Public Credit<\/li>\n<li>Hamilton&#8217;s &#8220;Reynolds Pamplet&#8221; admitting to his affair with Maria Reynolds and extortion by her husband<\/li>\n<li>Hamilton letters, checks and stock certificates<\/li>\n<li>Treasury Department circular signed by Hamilton<\/li>\n<li>Shares of Alexander Hamilton&#8217;s trust (signed by Gouverneur Morris, Rufus King and Oliver Wolcott) sold to benefit his estate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a Courtesy of Freeman&#8217;s)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Hamilton&#8217;s finances upon his death<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hamilton tragically died on July 11, 1804 following a duel with Aaron Burr. At the time of his death, Hamilton&#8217;s debts exceeded his assets after a career of public service. Hamilton&#8217;s close friend and colleague, Gouverneur Morris, summarized Hamilton\u2019s finances in a letter to Rufus King, another of Hamilton\u2019s friends:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Our friend Hamilton has been suddenly cut off in the midst of embarrassments which would have required years of professional industry to set straight \u2013 a debt of between 50,000 and 60,000 dollars hanging over him, a property which in time may sell for 70,000 or 80,000, but which, if brought to the hammer, would not, in all probabilty, fethch 40,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gouverneur Morris, who gave the eulogy at Hamilton\u2019s funeral, secretly raised approximately $80,000 from over 100 of Hamilton\u2019s friends. Other New England friends donated land in Pennsylvania, all of which was concealed from the Hamilton children for a generation.<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton\u2019s executors, John Church (Angelica\u2019s husband), Nicholas Fish, and Nathaniel Pendleton put the Hamilton Grange for sale at auction to pay off creditors. They purchased the Grange for $30,000, but sold it back to Eliza for $15,000, enabling her to remain in the cherished family homestead.\u00a0 The certificate of trust shares pictured above was the means used by Hamilton&#8217;s colleagues to assist the Hamilton family following Alexander&#8217;s early demise. Herzog is the founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Museum of American Finance in Manhattan.
